Description: This presentation will focus on the Hawai’i’s Caring Communities Initiative (HCCI), which is a study funded by the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The goal of HCCI is to prevent youth suicide and increase early intervention efforts throughout the State of Hawai’i.

Epidemiological data will be presented to illustrate the disproportionate impact of youth suicide on rural and Native Hawaiian communities in Hawai’i. To address these disparities, HCCI has partnered with six community organizations in Kahuku, Waimanalo, Kaua’i, Maui, Moloka’i, and Hilo to provide training and technical assistance on national evidence-based strategies on youth suicide prevention. The community-university partnership framework of HCCI will be described to highlight how evidence-based practices can be translated to fit the unique needs and strengths of each community and support the development of community awareness campaigns that are community-led and culturally-grounded.

Dr. Jane Chung-Do obtained her MPH in Social and Behavioral Health Sciences and DrPH in Community and Translational Research from the University of Hawai’i Department of Public Health Sciences. Her research interests include positive youth development, youth and minority mental health, rural health disparities, and culturally-based programming.

This event was broadcast live and recorded using Blackboard Collaborate. Technical support was provided by the RMATRIX Biomedical Informatics Key Function.
