Abstract

Filipino Americans are the most rapidly growing population of immigrants in the U.S. and suffer disproportionately from a number of chronic health conditions. Effectively addressing health issues among Asian American subgroups such as Filipinos will entail delivery of culturally tailored nutrition education, as well as use of evaluation tools appropriate for this audience. The objective of the proposed research is to adapt and assess the face validity of a food behavior checklist in Tagalog using a multi-step method. The project will be conducted in three stages: 1) Translation of text on the existing food behavior checklist from English to Tagalog. One translated version will be created and then reviewed by a panel of five Filipino Americans in a focus group in the community. Revisions will be made based on feedback. 2) Creation of color photographs to accompany text. A graphic design expert will create images of food items commonly consumed in the Filipino population. 3) Questionnaire item testing for face validity. Cognitive testing of text and images will be performed with 20 members of the Filipino community to yield a revised version reflecting the preferences of the target audience. Following this study, a follow-up proposal will be submitted to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to perform additional assessment of validity and reliability to yield a rigorously tested tool that may be used to evaluate the USDA’s nutrition education programs and culturally-tailored health interventions.
