Jane Hutchinson from Roche will be here Thursday Sept. 22, 1pm in BSB 320P at JABSOM Kaka’ako Campus to talk about Roche 454 sequencing technologies.

Her talk is entitled Roche 454 Next Gen’ Sequencing: Technology Advances and Emerging Applications

454 sequencing is a very powerful new sequencing technology well suited to re-sequencing viruses, as well as human genes. The platform has several applications that extend from the underlying technology, and may be of interest to you. In fact, UH Manoa has a GS FLX 454 machine available for campus members to use, at the ASGPB. 454 does differ somewhat from other next generations sequencing platforms, like the Illumina Solexa and ABI Solid.

A major difference at this stage is that the 454 per sequence read length is longer (up to 500 bp vs 100 bp for other platforms), which is helpful for viral genetic and human genetic applications of complex populations and loci, and where assigning genetic phase is important.
