Description: On September 29, 2009 an earthquake and tsunami struck American
Samoa and resulted in 34 deaths and extensive damage to dwellings and
other properties. Teams from the US Department of Health and Human
Services were involved in the response coordinated by FEMA. This
presentation discusses the community rapid needs assessment conducted by
the American Samoa Department of Health with technical assistance from
HHS response teams, and reviews the role of HHS within the National
Incident Management System.

CDR. Chen provides medical consultation on port of entry issues to
Hawaii and the US Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) and works to enhance
infectious disease surveillance in the USAPI. He was a member of CDC
response teams for the 2009 American Samoa tsunami.
