Perceptions of Native Hawaiian Community Partners about Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR)

Description
The University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene (UH), The Department of Native Hawaiian Health, and Ke Ola Mamo (Native Hawaiian Health Systems, Oahu) will implement a project that will inform community based participatory research (CBPR) involvement from the perspective of native Hawaiian community partners across the state of Hawaii but predominantly from the island of Oahu. Generally absent from the literature are assessments of how community partners perceive what works, what doesn’t, and the relationship between community’s involvement and nature of the research. Using a series of focus groups, this proposal seeks to strengthen the collaborative perspective of CBPR research between UH and Native Hawaiian community partners, thus fostering sustainable mechanisms to address health disparities among native peoples in Hawaii. The themes from the focus group interviews will serve to inform the revision of the “Participatory Research Manual for Community Partners” as well as the seminars offered by Center’s Community Engagement Core.

Progress
Results: (1) Trustable communication processes between academic researchers and the community is imperative; (2) Perceptions about the purpose, research intent and expectations determined level of participation; (3) Strength of participation reflected meaningfulness of the interaction.

Conclusions: Understanding community partners’ expectations of community research will inform how CBPR can be customized to fit expectations of underserved populations to shape sustainable mechanisms for reducing health disparities.
