Description: Topic: Muscle Preservation During Weight Loss in Older, Overweight Individuals

Location: Remotely–Via Adobe Connect and a dial-in conference line.

Presented by: Robert H. Coker, Ph.D., FACSM

Topics covered:

  • Obesity is a worldwide epidemic
  • Prevalence of sarcopenia is ~ 25-50% in individuals 60-80 years of age
  • Inactivity exacerbates the problem
  • Caloric restriction typically leads to significant muscle loss
  • Unique clinical conundrum for older, overweight individuals

Summary:

The older, obese individual represents a growing segment of the population that is faced with multiple health concerns.

While obesity in itself is associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, dietary induced weight loss may exacerbate the potential for muscle wasting and physical disability.

As we age, these issues become increasingly challenging as adipose tissue accumulates and skeletal muscle begins to atrophy in what is commonly referred to as sarcopenic obesity.
